Peekers Never Prosper

Growing up is tough (ha!) especially when you have one of those moments you (or at least your parents) will always remember. Ours happened yesterday. (And by yesterday I mean weeks ago because I’ve had this post saved within hitting publish for whatever reason! Woops!)

For the past couple weeks I’ve had presents wrapped under the tree because I figured Moses is finally old enough to understand the waiting game and if I’m going to spend the time wrapping them I want to enjoy them as long as I can. He loves checking out the different boxes, especially the ones he knows are for him.  He started asking daily “Mom, what’s in this box?” even though he knows I won’t tell. He keeps saying he hopes it’s a “powder”* and we giggle about it**.
Well Davy’s been doing a little shopping of his own and decided to wrap a stock stuffer for each of us to put in there early. Yesterday afternoon I walk into the house and heard it all unfolding.
Davy was taking a shower and Moses was happily sitting on the couch watching TV like he does every other time we take a shower; except today. He had gone into his stocking and thought long and hard before peeling back a corner of the wrapping paper to see what it was. At this time Davy has emerged from the shower and hears Moses saying something very fast (in that everything is fine voice) so of course he knew something was up. Instantly Moses knew he was busted.
Davy explained that we have to wait for Christmas then told him he couldn’t have it anymore and that’s when my sweet little mischievous boy lost it. He started to realize he made a mistake that he couldn’t take back and the surprise was over. He was sobbing even after we explained he could have it on Christmas. He kept saying over and over he wanted it to be a surprise. After a few minutes of crying he walked back over to his stocking, looked at it, and then came back sobbing again wishing it could be a surprise. He climbed on my bed and sat there crying some more. It was melting me because I knew it was a pivotal moment we’ve all had in our childhood; when you realize the guilt of peeking wasn’t worth the peek.  I have a feeling we won’t have to worry about anymore peeking going on at our house!
*He has seen this commercial and decided he loves this toy that shoots silly looking men with giant pink brains across the room and will stick to any surface. He has no idea what the real name is but in his head he calls it a powder because it POWS the men. We have figured out the actual name and purchased this ridiculous Scatter Brainz toy weeks ago and is nicely wrapped under the tree. Moses walks over to the biggest box and keeps asking if this is a powder and then we proceed to play dumb and have him explain it while we giggle our parent giggle knowing it’s in another box on the other side of the tree. Christmas is going to be so fun this year!
** I couldn’t help but laugh with my mom at how far I’ve come from saying comments like no toys that make noise or other things first times mom swear they will never do only to be walking around Target with this giant gun looking thing that shoots men with overly large brains. Yes I still stand my ground on killing bad guys and Spongebob but sometimes you have to let it go a little to see the smile on your kids face.

Christmas {DIY}

Headed into the third week post Christmas I figure it’s a great time to start talking about how ours went! I knew I wanted to give gifts to Moses’ teachers but I didn’t want to be the 10th child to hand them a coffee mug with a gift card in it. So I turned to Pinterest, crafty ladies I know, and inspiration I had picked up shopping to come up with three unique gifts.

First up, the felt Christmas tree. Using a cuddlebug I cut out about 40 400 felt circles which I glued together in the center to resemble a tree. Then using a felter needle thingy softened up a few small felt circles to make the ornaments 3D and a nice and fluffy star.

Second, a felt ball ornament. With a large glass ornament ball as the base I cut out different size felt flowers to mix and match. To finish them up I used an assortment of white buttons for the flower’s center. This present was for his college-aged class aid that is very bubbly and likes loud fun things; you could mix up the colors or design for someone more sophisticated.

And lastly, for his main teacher, wooden snowman. These are a hybrid of two different similar snowmen floating around Pinterest. They are blocks of wood painted white, distressed, and dressed up. The faces are hand painted and their hats are small mittens. We ended up loving the fun simplicity of these guys and made a ton of the sets for friends and family. Each set was customized depending on the person’s favorite colors and style.

Santa vs Jesus

Enter the great Santa debate. Truth be told, I never believed in Santa. My Mom never put much emphasis on it and by the time I was old enough to ask questions my older sister made sure I knew it was a scam. There was no crushing conversation or devastation but on the same note there was never any element of excitement or curiosity about the big guy.

Up until this year I haven’t thought much about it because Moses’ memory only went back a few hours but now he is much more curious and retains a LOT more information. Fun fact for my memory bank: Moses told us a detailed story about Uncle Danny setting off fireworks on July 4th just a few weeks ago; as in he is holding onto memories 6 months back. I’m sure his memory will only get stronger that is why this year I feel so pressured to figure out how we are going to do this Santa thing.
What I do know is as a Christian I want him to understand Jesus is the ENTIRE reason we celebrate Christmas; I want him to understand it’s like a big birthday party and we are celebrating the birth of our Savior. I want him to look forward to the Christmas eve church service and really understand. But more and more as an adult I’m hearing how much people loved believing in Santa as a child. The excitement of thinking he was coming to bring presents, leaving milk & cookies, and finding the gifts Santa brings; I don’t want to take that away from him. Ok so simple enough, we say Santa dropped off a few of the gifts and that be it? Not so fast.
What about when he asks me questions about Santa….I REFUSE to lie. There is no way I’m carrying on a lie and snowballing the thing until it turns into this scaring moment when he’s 8 and finds out it’s Daddy’s paycheck that really brings the gifts. I would be comfortable just smiling as he talks about Santa or expresses his excitement but there is no way I could make a remark like “Santa’s watching so you better be good”. So here I sit, unsure.

I’d love to hear your thoughts; what you experienced as a child, what you tell your kids, how that effected them.

And if you’re wondering, we are still sticking by our views last year about keeping things simple. There will not be 100 presents for 1 child under our tree and we did not go broke buying for each other. I even went as far as telling the grandparents PLEASE do not buy the boy more toys because if you peaked inside his playroom you would see we have been BLESSED with way.too.much as it is.

Spreading Christmas cheer {for all to hear}

A quick post to wrap up another wonderful week in Busyland. After yesterday’s post some may think how this week could be wonderful? Because despite my insecurities there is still so much to be thankful for in life. And speaking of thankful, thank you to everyone for the words of encouragement yesterday; you sure know how to reassure a friend!

Sisters by blood, friends by choice.

Mixing in mid week Christmas cheer with a trip to see the lights.

Motivation + Pinterest inspiration = Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeers

Those little guys are accompanying me to Moses’ Christmas party this afternoon. I am standing by what I said yesterday and taking an active role in school activities. It’s about time I join the other mom’s for a classroom mingle and too much sugar.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Cloth Diaper Week Day 2

When I first spotted itti bitti diapers online they were love at first sight; an Australian based company offering something I’ve never seen in the US diaper market. Versatility is the key to making these diapers so stinkin’ neat! The bitti tutto line is a one size diaper accommodating newborns to potty training (8 to 44lbs); that’s right, 44 pounds! They offer 18 standard colors and seasonal prints for their soft minky outside and each diaper comes with 3 different inserts to make this diaper fit any age.

When I first received the diaper all the inserts were a bit intimidating; colored snaps and different shaped inserts were not something I was used to. After reading the instructions and playing around with the options it all started to make sense. They even go as far as having two different ways to snap in the largest insert for girls or boys to accommodate what areas of the diaper gets the wettest.

For daytime use I snap the mini soaker to the largest soaker and snap into the diaper with the bulk being in the front. For night times I add the extra (medium sized) soaker and he has never leaked out.

When I first examined I diaper I was concerned with its size because everything seemed smaller then I was used to. However their patented “poo fence” has proven to do its job wonderfully holding everything in.
In my opinion there are a few downsides to these diapers. First is the way they “puff” out in the hiney area. Davy jokes saying he looks like J- LO because even though the diaper is fitted perfectly the outer material is sewn on with extra bunching to make a cute fluffy backside. If Moses was a girl this would be understandable but it doesn’t give a sleek like others do. Once he is dressed you do not notice this “puff” but it may make a difference for small babies.
The other is the cost; at $26.95 a piece it may be hard to buy a dozen or two up from but with all the little details I understand their expense. In my eyes they are the crème de la crème of diapers, the luxury of cloth and everyone should have at least one!

Itti Bitti has been kind enough to offer one of the readers their very own bitti tutto diaper!

To enter: leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite bitti tutto color! Make sure to leave your email address so I can contact you if you're the winner!

Something else I want to mention about the diapers is the company themselves. Through the review process I have had nothing but wonderful interactions with their staff and they really go above and beyond on their customer service. They also just released a series of You Tube videos to help their customers make the best of the itti bitti diapers; with tutorials on snapping inserts, sizing, and answering all those intimidating questions you may have.

Pretty lights on the tree...I'm watching them shine.

I did it! I cannot believe I uploaded all of the pictures and threw them into collages for your enjoyment! I'm glad that I made the effort to pull out the camera at almost every event!
Christmas décor around the house
Above the kitchen sink // tall ball/vase on the sideboard in dinning room // red/ green sparkle trees with snowman cookie jar on the sideboard // close up of the ornament sled above sink //
the “allowed to touch” stuff for Moses.

Ornaments on our tree
I never took a full standing picture of our tree because it looks a little wonky this year. The tree itself had great shape but it was my decorating that suffered. In fear of what Moses would do to certain ornaments I pretty much kept everything out of his reach zone. Our first family ornament next to peacock feathers at the top of the tree // our little Mexican lovers we got in Cozumel on our honeymoon // my most sacred ornament- a ceramic Precious Moments ball I’ve had for as long as I can remember // Moses’ new ornament for this year- Curious George reading a CG book. Moses’ favorite book is his collection of Curious George and for about 6 months straight he wanted us to read the same story in the collect every night. When I saw this at Hallmark I knew it was the one // Davy’s favorite childhood ornament- Big Bird!
Cookie decorating at the In-Laws
Moses thoroughly enjoying his cookie // (Davy’s grandma and mom) all decorating // a table full of delicious sugar // the boys enjoying their hard work.
Christmas Eve
All the boys // Mom stirring our traditional Christmas Eve soup // Sisters // the hubs and I in front of the Christmas tree- even though you can’t see it with the angle of the picture, it’s there (8 feet actually…no we’re not giants) // the husbands.
Christmas Eve tradition- opening one present after dinner
I love this picture- Davy helping Moses’ open his present // Look closely at the bottom of the picture, that’s Davy aka their human trampoline // playing with his new toy // I randomly decided to sit on Davy which then started the trampoline acts // taking turns climbing on his back then jumping off by his head.
Christmas morning at our house
Moses using his new bath toy as a gummie holder (and yes, the first thing he act that morning was gummies, it was Christmas!) // blowing his new train whistle // opening his stoking // trying out his new water bottle
Christmas morning at my parents
Dad, Mom, and sister at the breakfast table // I love this picture- Moses cousin Grace holding Moses while they swayed back and forth listening to music // the boys // Moses’ favorite decoration at Grammy’s house- all the musical toys. He actually likes to turn them all on at the same time, kind of like a terrible sounding chorus // Sister and Davy- always the best of buds

The beautiful tree at my parents
Let me start my saying my mother makes anything she touches incredible. Ever year her house is magnificently decorated in every nook and cranny and the Christmas tree in never bare. I could sit there forever and find hidden ornaments all through the tree. It’s hard to see in the pictures but the ornaments go back about 5 layers and I’m not kidding when I say there are 15 + strands of lights on that bad boy.
Not only is her tree beautiful but she takes the time to make every.single.present beautiful. Carefully picks which wrapping paper and bow fits each child’s style. Then which name tag and little piece of flare would look just right. I’m in awe every year of how much effort goes into making under the tree so pretty! I wish I had a nicer camera to capture the entire scene as a whole but these snapshots will have to do! Remember when I said we aren’t going overboard at our house this? Well that’s not the case at the “Pop Pop and Grammies” house. In her defense it honestly isn’t that many presents if you think 13 people times 5 gifts is already 65 presents! Anyways, that’s not the point, the point is, wow, her tree and presents are so beautiful!
A few of my personal favorite; of course they are all for me
because …..well….she knows what I like!
Opening presents at my parents
Kelley, 38 weeks preggo and queen of the comfy chair. As you can tell, all her presents are in arms reach! // Molly being a teenage (Eye roll! Winky face) // Grace with her new digital camera // Keira all dressed up as mermaid princess // Mom opening her special jewelry box // Kissing Dad- clearly she approved!
The rest of our day
I gave up taking pictures at the In-Laws because one of the girls had her super nice camera out and took over for me- I was very thankful! Davy and his brother telling everyone how this whole opening-presents-with-15 people-in-the-room was going to work // Davy giving Mo his first lesson // Moses’ new slippers // us // the Twins waiting for present time.

[my tree is still lit]

I have been taking a few days off to enjoy every bit of this Christmas weekend.

Lots of family.
Lots of spending time together, hanging out.
Lots of laughts and smiles and hugs.
And lots and lots and lots of eating!

I will return with pictures and memories later this week.

Lots of love from Busyland to you!

I'll be home for Christmas. Smiling.

This post was supposed to be filled with little snapshots of our home decorated for Christmas but I forgot to upload the pictures so it’s just me and the keyboard! This is how Christmas is going down in our house this year. The boys and I will wake up in our home, walk down the hall to a lit tree and open our stockings. Yep, that’s right, no presents. Seems weird? Let me explain.

Like I’ve mentioned before we’ve been experiencing some tough times financially lately and agreed early on not to buy presents for each other. We set aside money for family gifts we knew we needed to buy and a little more for additional family we wanted to buy for. We would take any extra money left over and buy small things for each other just to make us smile. As far as Moses’ presents go I kept holding off because I wasn’t really sure what he needed. As the weeks went on I still hadn’t bought him anything and then one Sunday our pastor gave an amazing message about Christmas.

Basically the gist of the message was why do we make ourselves miserable by going into debt and stressing about money at the holidays only to be giving to other what we don’t really have? Why am I going to buy Davy an expensive gift when we don’t have the extra money? Why do people feel the need to max at credit cards to provide the biggest box under the tree? Why isn’t it acceptable to give what we have and that be it?

Later that week I was walking past Moses playroom and realized he has an entire room filled with toys. His bedroom is bursting with books and clothes. He’s never mopped around the house begging for something new because all his needs are being met.

Sometimes I find myself so caught up with the holiday hustle and bustle of shopping and Santa and wish lists and wants and presents and …..uh, what have I become? What about Jesus’ birth and family? I’m not getting all radical about Christmas in because I love the tradition of Christmas trees, beautiful packages, outdoor lights, yummy candles, and Christmas music; it has to stop somewhere. So this year the boys are I will enjoy each other and our few stockings stuffers.

Then we will load up in the car and visit three other sets of families for Christmas. Our parent’s have graciously bought us gifts, mostly things we want, not need, and I’m certain our trunk will be filled with Moses’ new toys. And guess what, that’s fine. I would never push our minimalist Christmas on others that find joy in seeing us open those wonderful gifts. They have been blessed financially and want to share and that makes us happy too; it’s just something we’re not going into debt for.

Most importantly we get to visit with our siblings that live out of town. I cannot wait for Moses to see his cousins KiKi and Camden and play to their hearts content. And then re-meet his cousin Evan and run around like the three musketeers at Davy’s mom’s house. The best part is our family is staying for days so after all the Christmas hype is over we will have plenty of time to visit.

Don’t get caught up this weekend. Love time with family and good friends, remember the reason for the season, and have a very Merry Christmas!

The one where I show off our Christmas card

I wanted to link up at the Christmas Card Carousel and show everyone the card we finally picked! Remember a little while ago I showed a few card options and pictures we were thinking about? Well here it is!

I just saved these images from my Shutterfly projects so I apologize it’s all over the place. When you open the card the full page to your left is Moses and the words are to your right. You would think ordering 50 cards would be enough to give to every person we know but surprisingly we ran out fast after giving them to all our families. I’m sorry if you didn’t get one; just pretend this is especially for you!

Baby, it's cold outside.

The day after Thanksgiving I didn’t waste any time to start focusing on Christmas. I love the Holidays, especially Christmas, and wanted to enjoy the season for as long as I could. Last weekend I managed to decorate the entire house and purchase our Christmas tree. Earlier in the week we put lights on it and hopefully by this weekend it will be decorated. I’ve burned my two Yankee holiday candles all week and love walking into the house and just feel Christmas.

Wednesday night we all bundled up and headed outside to put the lights up. Davy did all the hard work while Moses and I cheered him on.
This is what it's like to try to take pictures of a toddler- they never, ever want to smile!
Ok I got a smile quickly followed by a loud squeel!
Our newest addition to the front yard this year is wire, light filled trees. They are a pain to open up and “fluff” but I love the way they light up the yard. Thankfully we had the right amount of extension cords, outlets, and supplies that it didn’t take long to transform the yard to a Winter Wonderland. Okay maybe not Wonderland but considering we are the only people on our street that hang outdoor lights I’d say it’s pretty festive!

Oh, it is love.

One step closer to Christmas cards.
These are not in the running for the card however I thought I would share a sneak peak! Now if I could only decide between the other 50 pictures :)

Mantel, Fridge, or Basket worthy?

One of my big goals for the Christmas season was not passing up the chance to send out Christmas cards! The last two years of either been really pregnant or too lazy to take the time to get a family picture taken or research for the perfect card. Well this year we started early, in October actually! I have a good friend met us out in a green pasture for a care free photo shoot of the three of us in hopes a few would be worthy of a Christmas card. Shortly after the photo shoot I started my search for a card to put them in! I have used Shutterfly in the past for prints and a calendar for father’s day so I knew they had quality products. There are literally hundreds of Christmas cards to choose from that fit everyone’s budget. They have all different colors, shapes and designs; even the option to put multiple pictures on one card. For the budget friendly folks they have over 150 flat photo cards starting at only .32 cents each! If you’re into writing a special note or yearly newsletter they offer a folded “greeting card” style starting at $1.19. Some of my favorites are found in the flat stationery card section. They are printed on premium cardstock that feels like an actual greeting card but still has a section for pictures and wording. Starting at a little over $1 each and with over 350 options I could look at these for days! Some of my favorite are:
The Mod Ornaments Holiday Card. I love how the picture is the primary focus (not to mention how adorable this little girl is) but still sends a Happy Holiday message.
If you’re not married but you and a friend want to send out a card I love the Retro Love Holiday Card. Its hip, fun, and has pink in it! Perfect for college roommates!
Another really great cards is Cool Blue Holly Christmas card. It has spots for three photos; I’m thinking a large one for our family picture and then two cute ones of the baby. I also love the small monogram feature and how the colors are a spin off of the tradition red and green.
Once I finally pick the perfect card for our family I plan on sending them out to all our friends and family. I have always loved getting Christmas cards and putting them on display and I cannot wait for people to do the same with ours! If you like Shutterfly and are looking into sending out cards this year check out the special offer they have for bloggers. Bloggers get 50 free holiday cards from Shutterfly sign up: http://bit.ly/sfly2010 !

from the outside in.

It’s the cold I crave. Rolling over in the middle of the night realizing the covers have slipped off and you’re shivering; gripping the man next to you, intertwining your legs in hopes it will stop the teeth chattering. Waking up and walking around the house in a sweatshirt until your ready to slip on your work shirt. Adding the ritual layers of scarf then gloves then pea coat before opening the door and feeling the dry cool air knock back into your lungs. Debating floor vent vs. face vent to unthaw your body while it shivers in the car waiting for the exhaust to stop coughing out white smoke. Finding it a necessity to be cupping a signature hot chocolate from Starbucks when outdoors just so your fingers don’t go numb. Bomb fires. Walking into the mall hearing childhood Christmas music playing on the loud speaker. Cuddling during any occasion. Reaching for the tube of chap stick in your back pocket, which has become a permanent accessory. The colder outside the warmer inside feels. Warmth of family of friends of my heart melting. The countdown to Winter has begun.

Pretty lights on the tree, you should be here with me.

**Sometimes work get a tid bit busy and I don't finish a blog. This week it happened twice so I'm calling this a smash up of 2 mini blogs plus new stuff!**

Earlier this week:
Tis the Season? Or maybe just Tis TheNester? Whatever it is, it’s got me in the mood to be domestic. Our house has been a work in project for months and it’s SLOWLY coming together… slowly meaning maybe by January I’ll have hung pictures and bought rugs! Anyways, the state of my home is another blog in itself, I wanted to talk about being domestic! After we hung out Christmas tree and put lights on it I knew the house needed more. It hardly felt like Christmas until you walk into every room and it’s decorated (thanks Mom for forever having the best decorated house I know). So I managed to come up with a wreath idea for the front door all by myself. I placed a big red ribbon at the top and tied on a collection of red, green, and silver balls. All different shines and textures (glitter on some, of course!) and sizes made up the collection and it turned out great! Then I made a mom-inspired ball filled vase. I used a large glass one that slightly coned at the bottom and opened at the top. At the bottom I started laying down a small strand of white lights followed by a purple, pink, teal, blue, green, silver, and white balls. I intertwined the lights as I filled up the vase so once it was completed the strand poked out of the top. It was super easy and gives off a really nice warm feel. I did a few other things around the house but those are the two I’m most proud of. Subscribing to The Nester blog gets me inspired on a daily basis to decorate the house and I cannot wait until I have a clear picture of what I want to do with the living room and put those plans into action.

Another domestic thing I’ve been into is baking. Well more like eating sweets, hot chocolate topped with whipped cream, and anything warm…. But again, different blog! Last week I had a splendid Christmas cooking making party with The Girlfriends and a sugar high lasted a good 48 hours. We spent half the time laughing and eating and finally around 11pm got down to business of decorating. I ended up taking home about 8 cookies and had no desire to eat them, they were too pretty! Thankfully Davy had no deep attachment and was able to enjoy. My next project will be, Nest inspired, to make a pan a delicious (fingers crossed) sweets for some friends and family. I think they are the pretty “Merry Christmas” little treat to pull everyone through these last 11 days before Christmas.

Wednesday:
Stomach “aches” are no fun. I wouldn’t even call it an ach because it felt more like gysers of acid erupting every 5 minuets. Disgusting graphic, I know, but there is no better way to describe it. I ended up leaving work early because I just could take it anymore. A little Pepto, couch time, and a Hallmark movie seemed to do the trick and I’m back at the “ol’ daily grind” again today.

Today:
I'm in a great mood.

Last night has a gift wrapping party with my mom and sisters and wrapped EVERY present I brought over. I was shocked at my productivity and proud of almost all the wrapping jobs (sorry Patrick…maybe next year I’ll get the bow perfect). Lots of laughs, a few tears (why do good people have to die), and an entire living room filling with gift wrap (my mom’s Martha Stewart with a booty, have I mentioned that?).

Tonight we are having a little adult time for a friend’s surprise party at Level 8, a downtown high-rise hotel. The bar has a big open balcony that over looks downtown and I’ve heard its very chic and big city trendy. Lots of our friends should be there and I’m anticipating many laughs. Tomorrow a friend couple of ours is getting married and that should also be a great time with a completely different set of friends. I’m looking forward to enjoying a wedding and not being in the center of it (sorry- I’m awful for still not blogging about ours… the subject stares me down and I’m too intimidated to go there). Hopefully Sunday will consist of the usual. Church, lunch, and lots of laying around wishing Monday never comes. Ideally I would love to take Moses to see Santa but if the line is halfway across the mall I don’t see that happening.

(this blog is too long, sorry, I don't care)

Dec 10, 2009

please remember me...happily...by the rosebush laughing

Tuesday night we put up Christmas lights and it was magical. Moses and I were the perfect non captivated audience to Davy hanging the icicle lights in the front yard. Grass is a foreign concept to Moses and watching him stand/move/touch/crawl in it is a hoot (yes, a hoot). Moses walked around smashing his banana between his fingers and into the grass and back in his mouth again. I let him enjoy being messy because we were outside and he never gets to be a wild boy. All the illuminated lights in piles on the driveway didn’t interest him; the only thing he wanted to do was practically run down the drive way to get to the road. Even when placed in the middle of the grass he would move as fast as he could to get to the smooth drive way. Shoe and sockless didn’t stop him from crushing pine straw and twigs to make it to the edge of the driveway. Why he wanted to feel the road is still a mystery. But playing with a freshly bathed, banana hands, happy baby while watching Davy put up Christmas light was the highlight of my night, my day, my week.

Tonight me and The Girlfriends are making Christmas cooking. My cubical is filling with the smell of Frebreeze NOTICEables Christmas scent and multi colored lights that stretch across my cubical opening. A mini tree with mini Target balls and beads and a pink tree-topper star sit on my desk. The office is filled with unwrapped, blatantly obvious presents for Moses. Tiss the Season : )
